Pine (ponderosa/lodgepole mix) as firewood
Pine firewood is easy to light and split and burns fast and hot at first. Ponderosa pine is rated 16.2 million BTU per cord and lodgepole 21.1, so heat depends on which pine you get. Many people mix pine with a hardwood or Doug fir.
- Heat
- 16.2 million BTU per cord (air-dried, USU Extension)
- Weight
- 2,336 lb per cord
- Best for
- Good for shoulder-season fires, kindling-size loads and quick warm-ups.
- Keep in mind
- Ponderosa throws more sparks, so use a screen on an open fireplace.
USU lists ponderosa at 16.2 and lodgepole at 21.1 million BTU per cord, so a mix lands in between.
Estimated price: $375 per cord delivered (Zone B), about 1/3 cord per tote. Final price depends on supply and your town.
Compare with Doug fir
Our Doug fir is 20.7 million BTU per cord and is the wood we have in stock, with totes from $125 and 1 cord delivered from $350. See Doug fir.
